Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a type of mood disorder that occurs (most often) in the wintertime, when the sufferer has less exposure to natural daylight.

Sometimes called Winter Depression, it is common during the seasons of the year when the days are relatively short. It is worse in the northern latitudes and almost non-existent at the equator.

Bright lights of up to 10,000 lux intensity (that's bright!) are sometimes used to help SAD. Regular 20-minute exposures at 5 AM, for example, is said to help.

However, High-Density Negative Ions have been shown to produce the same effect, without the inconvenience of having to spend time in front of an expensive 10,000 lux lamp.
